Fun facts about Monterey County’s wine region

The Monterey County AVA (American Viticultural Area) boasts over 45,000 acres of vineyards, making it one of the largest vinifera grape-growing regions in California. Monterey County's wine region is bound by the Monterey Bay, California's coastal mountain range, and extends into the Carmel and Salinas Valleys. The County's long growing season and varied climate result in seven different unique AVAs that span throughout the 80 mile-long valley. Grapes grown in Monterey County are characterized by their intense varietal flavor and balance of sugar to acid.

Freezing temperatures sweep California!

Stages of Dormancy in Grapes

Main physiological stages exist related to dormancy and cold hardiness in grapes.

1. The first stage in the dormancy process is acclimation, which is the ability to adjust to climate change. Dormancy begins after the grapevine has ripened its final crop and no more shoot growth will occur. This will take place during the fall months; October and November.

2. The second stage, mid-winter hardiness, is the ability to survive particular climatic adversities, especially freezing temperatures during dormancy. This occurs December through February. There is a limit as to how cold hardy a particular cultivar can be based on its genetic background. When grapevines are exposed to temperatures 20 °F or below max hardness occurs.

The answer you all are waiting for is NO…. the grapevines were not affected by the freezing temperatures we saw in California last night. The cold temps actually helped the grapevine progress further into its dormancy period, where the vines will be through the winter months.

$20-Plus Wines Gain Share in October

Information provided by Wine & Spirits Daily:

“In perusing some data today from IRI we were surprised to discover that wines in the $20+ range were the fastest growing table wine category in the 4 weeks to November 1 (or the month of October) by a long shot. Their growth in October was several percentage points higher than in September, and also seemed to steal some share from lower end wines”.

“The lower priced wines, $8 and under, lost some momentum in October as compared to September, according to four-week food, drug and c-store scan data from IRI. Wines in the $11-$15 declined in October as well”.

“Meanwhile, wines priced $8-$11 gained share in October when compared to September. The top two price segments measured by IRI in this data ($15-$20 and $20+) both made gains, with the $20+ segment doing especially well. In dollar sales, $20+ grew 9.8% in September and 14.8% in October. In terms of volume, $20+ grew 14.2% in September and 19% in October. This is good news for super-premium wines, although it may mean that consumers who typically spent $50 on a bottle of wine are trading down to $20 or $30”.

PoiZ Wine Estate is excited to see our consumers move toward quality product at a moderate price of $20. With so many wines to choose from we thank you for sticking by PoiZ wines during rough times.

We are happy to answer any questions. Email Bobby at bbrower@poizwineestate.com

Crush is almost finished!

Sorry for my long absence. Since school started it has been quite hectic around here! Crush has been going strong for a couple months now and as you may not know we crush around 23 different varieties! This helps us students see how many varieties are actually out there! Don’t worry there are thousands more then just the 23 we crush. This picture I am posting is of our sorting table. All the grapes we get in are hand sorted, that is why Fresno State’s wine quality is so great!

The 2009 Harvest Has Started!

The first couple tons of grapes have arrived!! We are starting the harvest of our Nouveau series. These wines are not crushed they go through what is called a Carbonic Maceration, this when the whole cluster is fermenting as whole. The Nouveau’s are meant to be drunk early and young. The purpose of this is to kick off the 2009 harvest year. There will be three wines in this series and the Muscat grapes were the first to arrive followed by Syrah. Stay tuned for updates on the Nouveau series and when the event releasing these wines will be held. I’ll give you a little hint, it’s in mid November!

Where do Rhone varieties come from?

The Rhône wine region in Southern France is situated in the Rhône river valley and produces numerous wines under various Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) designations. The region's major appellation in production volume is Côtes du Rhône AOC.
The Rhône is generally divided into two sub-regions with distinct viticultural traditions, the Northern Rhône and the Southern Rhône. The northern sub-region produces red wines from the
Syrah grape and white wines from Viognier grapes.
